What’s this all about ?

sam_2842 Back in 2010 we quit our jobs, packed up and left the UK on a mission to travel the world, or at least get as far as possible with the savings we had. The grand plan was to go form the UK to New Zealand without taking a flight. It was little ambitious and optimistic (see ‘Best Laid Plan‘) but we did pretty well. We got to Kuala Lumpur before taking to the skies for a bit of fun in Borneo and then on to New Zealand. We cheated once with a flight from Tibet back into China to avoid repeating an exhausting train ride – but those were the only flights.

This is the travel blog from the trip. It contains all the photos and notes posted while we were out on the road. Most of the 150 000 words were typed on our iPhone 3Gs’ which are still going strong.

By the numbers;

  • 285 Days – that’s just over 9 months.
  • 290 ‘On the Road’ Posts with around 150 000 words.
  • 270 odd comments from friends and family. Thank you all.
  • 17 Countries – if you include the UK, Myanmar, Hong Kong and Australia
  • 10 000+ (30GB) photos taken with 4 cameras (oops). It’s going to take a while to go through those.
  • 4GB of pretty bad video clips.
  • 1256 Expenses captured by V into our expense sheet.
  • A lot of Pounds, Euros, Roubles, Tugrik, Yuan, Kip, Dong, Riels, Baht, Ringgits and Dollars spent.

It was a truly an amazing adventure and we’re back in the real world now with a lease, jobs and that envious twinge every time we hear of someone we know heading off on an extended backpacking trip.

Our blog deserves an epilogue and some polishing but life tends to get in the way. We occasionally take a look at a random page but we hope others will find our experiences useful. It provides us a little nostalgia from time to time, although this year I’m going to get V to read me each days post as they happened 3 years ago.
